PeCap W12 '24: Final Submission

Writer: Hannah ChungHannah Chung

Last week I got some feedback from my formative submission on the facial animation. Here were the notes Dr Kennedy made:

Then additionally I got some feedback in class on my body animation, especially focusing on perfecting the planting of the feet. Here are the notes I took from that:

There were areas where I definitely needed more attention to the minute details on the feet. I worked off of these notes to make the performance better.

Something I should have been more aware of was the amount of sliding that occurred. The toes and heel shouldn't slide once they've made contact with the ground plane. This was easily fixed though by completely zeroing out the keys in the graph editor.

When the lip balm and the feet were cleaned further, I went on to work on the face animation. I created a new playblast camera for the purpose of submission, parenting the camera to the head control and then the reference video to the camera.

Then I could work on the adjustments of the face controls. I made two new adjustment layers - one for the brows and the other for the right hand corner of the mouth which seemed to slip down too far in the middle of the animation.

The adjustments are really minor, but they make the overall performance feel a lot less uncanny.

Another adjustment I made was to go in and edit the eyelids. There were areas where the eyes were far too open to look natural, so even though it matched in relation to the amount of incremental movement in the reference video, it looked off-putting during the wider performance.

After 12 weeks of lip balm, eyeballs and neon hair, it was finally time for me to submit this project. I posed the reference videos and playblasted the respective head and body videos for submission.

Overall I am very happy with how this project went. While there may have been some days of excruciatingly tedious analysis and raging hatred towards feet, lips and hands, I thoroughly enjoyed the precision factor in this assignment. I think I've learnt a lot over the course of this semester, making work that I am ultimately proud of.
